EN- Filo’ is a word in the local dialect that evokes a bygone tradition when farmers and their families would gather in their barns to tell stories and hold night-time vigils. The project Filò springs from an encounter between the artist and the residents of San Felice del Benaco- on Lake Garda in northern Italy’s Lombardy region- as well as its lands, stories and legends.
In Filo’ Valentina Vannicola tells the story of a community of lake fishermen who try to capture the moon so that they don’t have to fish in the dark, and tells other stories that speak of an enduring relationship with nature, which is experienced not just as an imaginative and valuable force, but as one to dominate and own. The community of San Felice del Benaco emerges as the main character of Valentina Vannicola’s photographs and has been involved in every phase of the project’s creation, from conducting research to featuring in the images as non-professional actors.
These images are part of a two-year project, 2022-2023, commissioned by Meccaniche della Meraviglia festival and the municipality of San Felice del Benaco for Bergamo and Brescia Italy’s cultural capital.
